As the number of servers in medium to large size data centres increases, so do the demands for managing their growing number and complexity. Greater demands are also placed on the physical environment in which the servers reside, including increased cooling and ventilation, power consumption, cabling, and space requirements. Blade server technology addresses these problems by dramatically reducing the physical size of the servers without limiting their computing capacity. In a blade server, the functionality of the server is reduced to its bare minimum (memory and a microprocessor) while other functions such as electrical power, cooling and network connectivity, are moved to the blade enclosure. Server capacity can be expanded simply by adding additional blades, which are hot-swappable, plug-and-play modules, thus providing significant flexibility and improved manageability.
